During the years of 1951 until 1982, The Museum of Modern Art in New York operated a special program called the Art Lending Service (ALS). This program was conceived by the Junior Council members of the museum as a way to educate young collectors about modern art. The program offered the general public the opportunity to rent artwork directly from the museum for a two-month period before deciding to return or purchase the artwork. During the program's operation of nearly 30 years, thousands of artworks passed through the museum and found their way into collector's homes.
While the Museum of Modern Art has an exceptional archive that includes quite a bit of the paperwork from the program, there is currently no comprehensive list of the works that went through the program. This site is dedicated to compiling not only the list of artworks that went through the program, but also creating a more comprehensive directory of the artists, galleries, and collectors that were involved. This is a large endeavor and will be evolving over time. Please check back for updates.
